My First Market Experience

I always wondered what it would be like to try to sell my crafts at a market.

I received an invitation in early October'12 to attend a market at Wallacia NSW Australia. The local Progress Association was putting on a market to raise money to replace the roof on their hall. It was held in late November'12.

It was a stall or car boot sale, so I thought I could set up a table and have my vehicle behind so my daughter-in-law "Danica" and I could use the back of the 4WD as well.

My son/her husband made up a frame to erect over the table and my husband/her father-in-law purchased a tarpaulin to cover the frame. So Danica and I took our items to the market to set up and the boys turned up later with the frame but someone who shall remain nameless (purchaser of the tarpaulin) forgot to bring it.
Just as well it was a sunny day !!

The market wasn't a success, only due to lack of advertising I think.  It should have been great because the position was on a very busy road used by many tourists as well as locals.  I didn't see any advertising in the local papers which cover and area from the Lower Blue Mountains to the Nepean Valley, Silverdale, Warragamba - all being major tourist destinations.

Although the experience on the day was disappointing, we learned a lot from it. Now we have an idea of what to expect and how to be better prepared next time. We have decided that we will try the market experience again, but we will check out a few regular markets first before we decide which ones to attend and make sure someone doesn't forget the shade cover. I will let you know how we get on.

I might explore the possibility of opening shop's on Etsy & Handmade.
Will update when that happens.

I Love Handmade Pincushion's

Just wanted to share my love of handmade Pincushions. I have made lots of them lately to sell at my first craft market that was held in Wallacia, NSW, Australia.
These pincushion's could also be used as decorations, being displayed in a bowl or on a shelf or table.

Although the market was not a great success because it wasn't advertised very well, it was an experience to learn from and I learnt a lot.

My daughter-in-law and I will certainly be attending another market soon.

* TIP
Hexagon shape Pincushion & Needle Case

My tip for stuffing pincushion's or other projects such as soft toys, dolls and bears would be not to try and place too much stuffing in at once. Be patient and use small pieces of 'fiber fill' as this will allow you to create a nice, non lumpy shape that you will be proud of.

First Blog !!
Just trying to figure out what blogging is all about, but, it looks interesting and there are so many very interesting creative people online to learn from. I hope to meet some of you via email or blog soon.

About Me.
I have been playing around with a needle & thread since I was about 10yrs old when my mother let me play with material scraps from her sewing which I would turn into dolls clothes for myself and my younger sister.

Mum used to make her own dresses and aprons as well as clothes for myself and my brothers on my grandmothers singer treadle. I loved that machine. She was always sewing, knitting, embroidering or crocheting something.
My grandmother and mother taught me to knit while I was getting over the measles when I was about 5yrs old. It seemed to me that everyone did something with some sort of needle, so it just felt natural for me to follow in their footsteps.

Wedding Dress Yr 2010
I have been making my clothes since I was 15, my childrens clothes since my first son was born in 1973 when I was 21. Since then I have made suites for my husband and youngest son, yr 10 and yr 12 formal  dresses and a wedding dress for my youngest son's wife in 2010.

Hexagon Quilt (paper pieced)
I started my first quilt in 1985. An English paper pieced endeavor,
I finished it this year (finally) 2012.

Another of my quilts to get finished was a Memory quilt I made for my brother. We cut out all the logo's and badges from dozens of his football and fishing club shirts he had collected over the last 25 years. It seemed more practical to put them into a quilt than to save bags of shirts that would eventually be lost or thrown away.

At this stage I have 27 quilts in varying stages of completion.12 have been quilted and 3 partially quilted and 12 are completed tops only.

Since 2009 I have been embroidering Hand towel & washer sets on my Janome 1100 computerised embroidery machine.
They have become very popular and are selling through  "Peppercorn Cafe" Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa, NSW Australia.
